Are you struggling with blurry vision or seeing double? If so, you might have binocular vision dysfunction. This common eye condition occurs when your eyes don’t work together properly, causing problems with depth perception and visual coordination. Fortunately, there are treatment options available, including the use of prism lenses.
What are prism glasses/lenses?
Prism lenses are specially designed eyewear that refract light to help align your eyes and enhance binocular vision. There are several different types of prisms that can be used for this purpose, each with its own unique characteristics and benefits:
Base-in prisms are commonly used to treat convergence insufficiency, a condition where the eyes have difficulty converging, or moving closer together, when looking at an object. These prisms work by bending the light in a way that makes the object appear closer, which helps the eyes converge more easily.
Base-out prisms, on the other hand, are used to treat divergence insufficiency, a condition where the eyes have difficulty diverging, or moving further apart, when looking at an object. These prisms work by bending the light in a way that makes the object appear further away, which helps the eyes diverge more easily.
Vertical prisms are used to correct vertical misalignments of the eyes, such as those that occur in conditions like vertical heterophoria and vertical strabismus. These prisms work by bending the light in a way that shifts the visual field up or down, depending on the direction of the prism.
Yoked prisms are also used to treat binocular vision dysfunction. This type of prism is designed to move both eyes in the same direction at the same time, which can help improve binocular fusion and reduce symptoms of double vision. Yoked prisms are often used in conjunction with other types of prisms, such as base-out and base-in prisms, to provide a more comprehensive treatment.
Another type of prism that can be effective for treating binocular vision dysfunction is the microprism. This type of prism is much smaller than traditional prisms, making it less noticeable and more cosmetically appealing. Microprisms are often used to treat conditions like convergence insufficiency, where the eyes have difficulty converging on an object. They can also be used to improve visual tracking and reading skills.
Benefits of Prism Glasses for Binocular Vision Dysfunction
Prism glasses can significantly improve visual clarity and coordination for those with BVD. However, it’s important to work closely with a qualified optometrist or ophthalmologist to determine the best type and amount of prism for your specific condition. This will help ensure that the prisms are effective and provide the maximum benefit.
