Ortho-K Prices at Westmead Eyes
Your initial consultation determines whether Ortho-K is suitable and which lens design is most appropriate.
A detailed assessment before any lenses are ordered
We assess your child’s prescription, eye health, myopia history and risk of future progression.
- Prescription and eye-health assessment
- Review of myopia history and progression risk
- Corneal topography when clinically appropriate
- Baseline axial-length measurements when indicated
- Discussion of suitable myopia-control options
If Ortho-K is recommended
We will recommend either a standard or advanced lens design based on your prescription and corneal measurements.

What Does the Ortho-K Package Include?
Our standard package is intended to cover the lenses and professional care required during the initial fitting process.
It includes:
- One pair of Ortho-K lenses
- Analysis of corneal topography
- Lens fitting and clinical evaluation
- Initial fitting consultations
- Insertion and removal instruction
- Lens cleaning and care education
- A starter lens-care kit
- Assessment of daytime vision
- Monitoring of lens position and corneal health
Any services outside the initial fitting period, replacement lenses or future redesigns will be explained separately.
Standard or Advanced Ortho-K?
Not every patient requires an advanced custom-designed lens.
A standard design is suitable for many straightforward prescriptions. A more advanced design may be beneficial when the prescription or shape of the eye requires greater control over the individual lens parameters.
The recommendation is based on:
- Your prescription
- The amount and type of astigmatism
- Corneal topography
- Corneal symmetry
- Pupil size
- Previous Ortho-K results
- Treatment-zone position
- Your daytime visual requirements
We recommend the design most likely to provide an effective, centred and clinically appropriate result—not simply the most expensive option.
Are There Any Additional Ortho-K Costs?
Possible additional costs can include:
- Advanced custom lens designs
- Routine reviews after the initial fitting period
- Repeat corneal topography
- Axial-length monitoring
- Replacement of lost or damaged lenses
- Spare lenses
- Lens redesign following prescription or corneal changes
- Cleaning solutions and ongoing lens-care products
These costs are not necessarily included indefinitely in the initial package.
We will explain the recommended review schedule and anticipated ongoing costs before treatment begins.
How Long Do Ortho-K Lenses Last?
Ortho-K lenses commonly require replacement approximately every two years, although the appropriate replacement time varies.
Replacement may be needed sooner if:
- The prescription changes
- A child’s eyes continue to grow
- The lens becomes scratched, warped or damaged
- Lens deposits affect comfort or vision
- The lens no longer centres adequately
- The treatment effect becomes less stable
Regular reviews allow us to assess lens condition, vision, corneal health and whether the existing design remains appropriate.
Ortho-K for Children and Myopia Management
Ortho-K can provide clear daytime vision without glasses while also forming part of a child’s myopia-management plan.
However, clear daytime vision does not by itself show whether myopia progression is being adequately controlled.
Where appropriate, we monitor axial length—the length of the eye—to measure eye growth over time. This provides more meaningful information than relying only on changes in the glasses prescription.
Ortho-K can slow myopia progression for many children, but it cannot guarantee that progression will stop completely. Regular monitoring allows us to assess the response and discuss whether the management plan needs to be changed.
Ortho-K for Adults
Adults may also choose Ortho-K to reduce their dependence on glasses and daytime contact lenses.
It can be particularly helpful for people who:
- Play sport or exercise regularly
- Work in dusty or air-conditioned environments
- Experience discomfort with daytime contact lenses
- Want a reversible alternative to laser eye surgery
- Prefer clear daytime vision without glasses
Adult suitability depends on the prescription, corneal shape, eye health and visual expectations.
Private Health Insurance
Some private health funds may provide a benefit towards prescribed contact lenses, including Ortho-K lenses.
The amount depends on your insurer, level of extras cover, annual limits and claiming rules. You can ask your health fund whether a benefit is available for a pair of rigid contact lenses under item number 874.
Private health insurance will generally cover only part of the total cost. We recommend checking directly with your health fund before ordering.
Ortho-K Cost FAQs
Clear answers about Ortho-K pricing, package inclusions, ongoing care and replacement lenses.
How much does Ortho-K cost in Sydney?
The initial myopia-control consultation at Westmead Eyes is $195. Standard Ortho-K packages start from $1,850.
For a child suitable for a standard lens design, the total initial cost starts from $2,045. Advanced custom-designed lenses cost more and are individually quoted.
Is the $195 consultation included in the lens package?
No. The initial myopia-control consultation is charged separately from the Ortho-K lens package.
The consultation allows us to assess your child’s prescription, eye health and risk of myopia progression before recommending a treatment.
What is included in the $1,850 Ortho-K package?
The standard package includes:
- One pair of individually fitted Ortho-K lenses
- Corneal topography and lens fitting
- Consultations required during the initial fitting process
- Insertion, removal and lens-care training
- A starter lens-care kit
- Initial vision, lens-fit and corneal-health reviews
Will I know the total cost before ordering?
Yes. We will explain the recommended lens design, package inclusions and total fee before any lenses are ordered.
There is no obligation to proceed with Ortho-K after attending the initial consultation.
Why might my Ortho-K lenses cost more?
A more advanced lens design may be required for a higher prescription, significant astigmatism, an unusual corneal shape, persistent lens decentration or a previously unsuccessful fit.
These lenses cost more because they require additional customisation and may involve a more complex fitting process.
Are advanced lenses better than standard lenses?
Not necessarily. A standard design is an excellent option for many children and adults.
An advanced lens is recommended only when the additional customisation is likely to provide a better-centred treatment zone, clearer vision or a more appropriate clinical fit.
Are ongoing Ortho-K reviews included?
Consultations required during the initial fitting process are included in the standard package.
Routine reviews after the initial fitting period, repeat corneal topography and ongoing axial-length monitoring may involve additional fees.
What happens if an Ortho-K lens is lost or damaged?
A replacement lens can be ordered. An additional fee may apply depending on whether the lens was lost or damaged and whether it remains covered by an applicable replacement warranty.
We will confirm the warranty conditions when your lenses are ordered.
How often do Ortho-K lenses need to be replaced?
Ortho-K lenses commonly require replacement every one to two years, although this varies according to lens condition, prescription changes, eye growth and how well the lenses are maintained.
Replacement may be required sooner if a lens becomes scratched, damaged, heavily deposited or no longer provides an appropriate fit.
Can private health insurance help cover Ortho-K costs?
Some private health funds may provide a benefit towards prescribed contact lenses, including Ortho-K lenses.
Benefits depend on your insurer, level of extras cover, annual limits and claiming rules. Ask your health fund about benefits for a pair of rigid contact lenses under item number 874.
Does Ortho-K permanently correct vision?
No. Ortho-K is reversible. The lenses must be worn regularly overnight to maintain the daytime vision correction.
If lens wear is discontinued, the cornea gradually returns towards its original shape and the original prescription returns.
Does Ortho-K stop myopia progression?
Ortho-K can slow myopia progression for many children, but it cannot guarantee that eye growth will stop completely.
Where appropriate, we use axial-length measurements to monitor eye growth and assess how the child is responding to treatment.
Can I get a second opinion about existing Ortho-K lenses?
Yes. We assess children and adults experiencing reduced vision, discomfort, lens decentration, corneal staining or difficulty achieving a stable result with their existing Ortho-K lenses.
