Retinal, optic nerve and visual-function monitoring in Westmead
Some medications and clinical trial protocols require regular eye examinations to monitor for possible effects on the retina, optic nerve or visual function.
Westmead Eyes provides structured ocular screening for patients taking medications with known or potential eye-related side effects. We also work with hospital departments, specialists and research teams requiring ophthalmic assessments as part of a clinical trial or monitoring protocol.
Who May Need This Assessment?
You may require regular eye monitoring if you are taking medications such as:
- Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil)
- Ethambutol
- Corticosteroids, including prednisone
- Isotretinoin (Roaccutane)
- Tamoxifen
- Topiramate (Topamax)
- Other medications where ocular monitoring has been recommended by your treating specialist
What Does the Assessment Include?
Testing is tailored to the medication, symptoms and monitoring protocol. It may include:
- Comprehensive eye examination
- OCT imaging of the macula and optic nerve
- Visual-field testing
- Colour-vision assessment
- Retinal photography
- Additional targeted testing where clinically indicated
These tests help identify subtle changes that may not be visible during a routine eye examination or noticed by the patient in the early stages.
Hydroxychloroquine and Plaquenil Screening
Hydroxychloroquine can affect the macula in a small proportion of patients, particularly with longer treatment duration or higher cumulative exposure.
Screening commonly includes OCT macular imaging and visual-field testing, with results compared over time to detect any meaningful change.
Clinical Trial and Research Screening
Westmead Eyes can provide ophthalmic assessments for hospital departments, specialists, pharmaceutical studies and research teams requiring eye examinations as part of a clinical-trial protocol.
Testing can be performed according to the study requirements, with results and reports supplied to the referring department or research team.
Hospital departments and clinical-trial coordinators are welcome to contact us to discuss the required testing protocol, reporting format and appointment arrangements.
Communication With Your Treating Team
A detailed report can be provided to your rheumatologist, respiratory physician, neurologist, oncologist, dermatologist, GP, hospital department or clinical-trial team to support coordinated care and ongoing monitoring.
Fees and What to Expect
Out-of-pocket fees may apply for OCT imaging, visual-field testing and other advanced assessments. These typically range from $100–$200, depending on the tests required.
You will be advised of the expected fees before testing proceeds.
