Myopia, or nearsightedness, is becoming increasingly common among children, and it can lead to serious eye problems later in life. However, a new study suggests that using low-concentration atropine eye drops can help delay or even prevent the onset of myopia.
In the study, which was conducted at the Chinese University of Hong Kong Eye Centre, 474 children aged 4 to 9 years old who did not have myopia were randomly assigned to three groups. One group received nightly eye drops of 0.05% atropine, another received 0.01% atropine, and the third group received a placebo. The study found that after two years, the group receiving the 0.05% atropine eye drops had a significantly lower incidence of myopia than the placebo group. The other two groups did not show a significant difference compared to the placebo group.
This is great news for parents who are concerned about their children’s eye health, and it’s important to note that low-concentration atropine eye drops are safe and well-tolerated in children. However, it’s important to understand that further research is needed to confirm these findings and to determine the long-term safety of this treatment.
Another effective treatment option for myopia in children is orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k or corneal reshaping therapy. This treatment involves wearing special contact lenses while sleeping, which gently reshape the cornea to correct myopia. Orthokeratology has been shown to effectively slow down the progression of myopia in children, and it is a safe and non-invasive treatment option.
