At our practice, we are proud to offer scleral lenses to our patients. These specialised lenses are designed to provide exceptional comfort and vision correction for individuals with challenging eye conditions. As one of only three practices in Sydney with access to a sMap3D corneo-scleral topographer, we are able to offer a unique and advanced service to our patients. This revolutionary technology allows us to create custom-fit scleral lenses with unparalleled precision and accuracy. With this 3D modelling technology, we can capture over one million measurement points to create a detailed map of the unique shape of your eye, ensuring a comfortable and effective fit for your scleral lenses
sMap3D designed scleral lenses offer a better fit, have higher levels of comfort and give better quality vision compared to traditional scleral lenses. In addition, sMap3D designed scleral lenses are the only lenses currently available in Australia that allow for maximum oxygen transmission to the eye, making them an excellent choice for patients with keratoconus or a corneal graft. If you are looking for a high-quality scleral lens option, sMap3D designed lenses are the way to go.
A custom designed sMap3D scleral lens
If you have scleral lenses that have been traditionally fit with a trial-and-error approach, you may have the following issues:
- Decentered lenses where you may not be looking through the “optic zone” causing reduced clarity in vision
- Fogging of your lenses as there are gaps for tears to enter the lens bowl where the lens is not aligned to your eye or is tilted on your eye surface
- Redness around the edges of the lenses where it may be digging into your conjunctiva (white part of the eye)
- Uncomfortable lenses
- Seeing rainbows or haloes around lights if you have a corneal graft, resulting in failure or decompensation due to lack of oxygen
What Does The Process Involve?
The 3D modelling process is completely painless and captures images of your eye from a number of angles which are then stitched together. This allows for a full range of designs and customisation options for even the most complex eye shapes.
How Much are sMap3D Designed Scleral Lenses?
Scleral lenses designed using sMap3D are slightly more expensive that standard scleral lenses. The cost of a pair of sMap3D designed scleral lenses starts from $3650. This includes all the consultations involved for the initial lens fitting process, one pair of sMap3D designed scleral lenses and a lens care kit to get you started. Additional charges will apply for surface coatings such as Tangible Hydra-PEG and multifocal or bifocal designs.
The cost of a sMap3D scan is $265. Should you decide to proceed with order on the same day as the scan, this fee is waived.
If you have private health insurance with extras cover — such as Medibank Private, BUPA, or others — part of the cost of the initial package or replacement lenses may be claimable.
In the event that your scleral lens is ineffective and it needs to be discontinued within our 3 month warranty period, we offer a 50% credit of the lens costs towards another optical appliance (this does not apply to scleral lenses designed over corneal grafts and there may be limited wear time depending on the condition of the graft). This amount will be given to you as a credit on your account at Westmead Eyes. The cost of our consultations are non refundable.
What If I Currently Wear Scleral Lenses And Wish To Be Refitted?
Before you come in for your sMap3D exam, it is crucial that you take a break from wearing your scleral lenses or corneal RGP lenses for at least two days. The optimal amount of time to be out of lens wear is 1 week. This is to allow us to accurately measure the surface of your eye’s shape without any distortions. Please understand that even with highly advanced technology, such as the sMap3D, your results will not be as accurate and the quality of your lens design will be reduced if you do not remove your lenses prior to the scan.
